One of my first projects at Numkull was to create a Sonic the Hedgehog candle holder. The item box was our first choice, with a glass candle that can be rotated to see the different icons.
As well as the 3D model I had to create print ready vector art of all the icons. We wanted the icons to be semi transparent so that as the candle burns down it lights them up.
I tried to give the holder a pixelated look with the insets in the corners. It’s hard to translate a 2D pixel style to 3D! Also, working at scale, details must be suitable for production. Minimum thickness, overhangs, and the step height between sufaces all need to be considered. Once we were happy with the design I created a 3D printed prototype on our Formlabs. All of the modelling and rendering was done in 3ds Max.
I think the final product is great! It was well recieved by Sonic fans (including my sister as a Christmas present). Using a different material for production would have been my preference, to keep the lines as sharp as possible. It has become somewhat of a collectors item online though! Check out a video of the final product below.
