I was tasked with designing an incense burner for the launch of Fallout 76. Being a fan of the franchise I immediately thought of the Rad Resistance perk, with the Vault Boy sitting in a barrel of nuclear waste. The barrel would work great for the housing and chimney of the incense, with the smoke coming from the toxic ooze around the character.
During the modelling process I had to think about the ‘chimney’ and getting the incense to stay lit. If the smoke doesn’t leave the chamber the lack of oxygen will quickly extinguish the incense cone. Little steps around the base allow air to be drawn in and then the vents, around the well for the incense, replenish the oxygen as the hot air begins to rise.
I tried to keep the design consistent by repeating the Nuclear symbol for the shape of the vents, even though the base won’t be seen normally. The concept images above and below were modelled and rendered in 3ds Max.
The materials we use are generally based on costs so it’s above my pay grade! I would have liked it to be a ceramic material, as I think that’s more suitable for burning incense. As a small studio (at that time) we were trying to make a name for ourselves, you have to apply/buy a license for every category of product. The figurine space is hotly contested, getting the license for incense burners isn’t. So, in this way, we could make a ‘figurine’ 😀
I’m happy with the finished product (production material aside), it’s a great collectors piece for any Fallout Fan (including me)! Check out the product reveal video below presented by our social media manager.
